Phoebe Allen as Karen
Karen Hewitt is a main character, portrayed by Phoebe Allen, in the first three series of the Original Series and is Bernard's best friend.

She is the same age as Bernard, lives almost next door and is in the same class at the same school. She first finds out about the watch in Plenty of Time when Bernard accidentally leaves the watch at school when it slips out of a broken pocket.
From then on, she borrows the watch in many episodes which are often centered on her instead of Bernard. Bernard being late to her party in the very first episode is one of the reasons that the Postman gives him the watch in the first place after his present for her is destroyed and he wishes for more time when he sits at the end of a rainbow by the bin where he disposed of it. Karen has problems writing stories until she starts borrowing the watch. Like Bernard, she also uses the watch to solve everyday problems or help people although she is less mischievous in which she does not tend to use it to play tricks or seek revenge unless it is necessary. An example of this is when she uses the watch to teach classmate Fergus Malahide a lesson when he keeps borrowing her things without asking.
Her hobbies and interests include tennis, swimming, making models, ice skating, Harry Potter and Titanic. She also likes animals considering she has had at least four pets over the course of the show, a rabbit called Snowy, two goldfish, and a rat called Boris. She also had at least two terrapins in Borrowed Time although they are never seen.
