In the 2003-2004 series Nathan Roberts[1] is Bernard 's best friend. Nathan lives with his parents and gets the occasional visit from his grandmother. He mentions a sister but she is never seen in the show.[2] Nathan is sceptical about the use of the watch and only tends to use it when it is important, unlike Bernard who uses it whenever he feels like it.

Nathan's friendship with Bernard takes a bad turn when he joins Nicolette's friendship group in Turning Japanese. Nathan reveals, before he reconciles with Bernard, that he wants a friend who will always like him and not one who will dump him when they get a better offer. Nathan is close to his maternal grandmother and misses her when she is estranged from his mother before they reconcile in Time Out.
